Tips for Relieving a Headache

April 5th, 2008 by Editor

Headaches are a very common complaint that affect just about everybody at some time. Some people get headaches only occasionally while others can get them very frequently. Headaches also vary greatly in intensity, from slightly annoying to an incapacitating throbbing pain.

Most people consider that headaches fall into one of three categories:

Tension headaches

These are the most common type, and by some estimates, account for 90% of all headaches

Muscular headaches

These include the ‘lovely’ migraines and cluster headaches.

Inflammatory headaches

These are usually caused by serious disorders such as infections, tumors, and aneurisms.

I personally suffer from tension headaches and the odd migraine – neither one is any fun at all!!

While I have taken prescription medications for the migraines and tension headaches, and I find that if I pay attention and catch the “little beasty” before it progresses, I can usually quickly make it go away without resorting to these pills.

Here are some alternatives that you might try.

1. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of tea and drink the tea. This remedy is said to give immediate relief.

2. Ginger is an ancient anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving spice that contains two substances thought to help fight migraines. I like fresh ginger so I just chew on a piece but I also make a ginger tea from grated fresh ginger. If I have a cold, I add honey and lemon.

3. Peppermint oil applied locally (externally) proved to be just as effective as acetaminophen in relieving headache pain in a German study of patients suffering from tension headaches. Simply apply a drop or two to each temple and rub in gently. Peppermint oil helps to reduce the intensity of a headache by encouraging muscles to relax.

4. Try EFT (EFT to relieve pain). This method of tapping specific points while repeating a specific phrase has been shown to be very effective in relieving many things, including headaches.

Wishing you good health!
