<p>They&#8217;re not interested just because these people have exceptionally long lifespans, often living to at least one hundred, sometimes older.</p>
<p>What makes these societies exceptionally interesting to scientists is the fact that that residents of Okinawa and the Mediterranean remain very healthy and active well into old age. Instead of succumbing to age related diseases like <a href="http://2terriers.allinonehealth.com/health-and-beauty/general.php">diabetes</a> or cancer or heart disease, many of these residents live to a very old age and then die peacefully in their sleep. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you have osteoporosis, as I do, you need to exercise to prevent more bone loss but you must be careful of the types of exercise that you do.  Two types of exercise that were recommended to me were weight-bearing and resistance exercises.  </p>
<p>Water aerobics and osteoporosis are a good combination.  In a water aerobic class led by a qualified instructor participants are guided through an exercise routine that actually requires more muscle development and is harder than the same movements done on land.  And, because of the water’s buoyancy, the joints receive less impact, less stress and are at a reduced risk for injury.</p>
<p>These water aerobics classes are sometimes called pool therapy, hydrotherapy, or aquatic therapy.  The exercises are designed to decrease back pain, condition and strengthen muscles and when done actively will also improve the cardiovascular system.</p>
<p>A treatment program for people with osteoporosis is individualized to the participants needs and limitations.  There are times when a land based program is too difficult, painful or the bone density is significantly decreased.  This water aerobics treatment for osteoporosis is versatile and particularly good for those who have difficult with land based activities or endurance.</p>
<p>Because the water is buoyant the participant has the option of resting off and on throughout the class in an environment that supports their body.  This helps them to increase their endurance over time without over stressing joints and muscles.</p>
<p>Other properties of water that make it an ideal medium for exercise is viscosity.  Because of the gentle friction against the movements in the water the muscles are encouraged to strengthen and increase endurance without the added risk of injury due to loss of balance or over stretching.  Water also has hydrostatic pressure exerted on the body which improves the function of the heart and lungs.  This pressure against the body also increases the blood flow through the lower extremities.</p>
<p>Researchers have also found that the perception of pain is diminished in the water and the participants are often more relaxed during the exercise program because of the water.  </p>
<p>Water aerobic programs should be avoided when the participant has a fever, severe heart failure, incontinence or infection.  If the participant has a severely limited endurance level they may have difficulty navigating the slippery apron of the pool to participate.  The use of rubber mats will increase traction and help decrease the risk of falls.</p>
<p>And, while working out in the pool helps to increase muscle strength and endurance it doesn’t help to increase the low bone density found in people with osteoporosis.  However, this increase in muscle strength and endurance does help these sufferers to return to land based gravity controlled activities that will help to increase bone density.</p>
<p>Increasing that muscle strength will also help people with osteoporosis to guard against bone fractures caused by decreased bone density and improved balance that will decrease the risk of falls.  And although the rate of bone loss can pick up significantly after <a href="http://2terriers.allinonehealth.com/health-and-beauty/women.php">menopause</a> (and laying down new bone decreases) it is never too late to start an exercise program.  </p>
<p>People participating in water aerobics for treatment of osteoporosis will also find that they have an increased ability to carry out daily living activities, maintain a good posture, relieve pain and increase their sense of well-being.</p>
<p>People with osteoporosis should avoid high impact exercises such as jumping, running or jogging but running or jogging in the pool will give the participant all of the cardiovascular and muscle benefits of running without the jarring impact on their bones and joints.</p>

<p>Age related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly population. This eye disease will gradually destroy the sharp, central vision of the eye. This is the main part of your vision. Without the central vision, you will no longer be able to read, drive or perform routine daily tasks.</p>
<p>Macular degeneration affects the part of the eye called the macula.  The macula is located right in the center of the retina. The retina is the tissue that lines the back of the eye and it is very light sensitive. The job of the retina is to convert light or images into electrical impulses and send these impulses to the brain. </p>
<p>There are two types of macular degeneration. There is wet age related macular degeneration and there is dry age related macular degeneration. The type of macular degeneration you have will determine how fast you can lose your eyesight. </p>
<p>Wet age related macular degeneration happens because blood vessels behind the retina will start to form underneath the macula. These blood vessels have a tendency to leak fluid and sometimes blood. </p>
<p>When the vessels behind the macula begin to leak fluid, this will raise the macula from it’s normal spot. This will damage the macula quickly and loss of central vision will occur. This type of age related macular degeneration is sometimes referred to as advanced age related macular degeneration. </p>
<p>Dry age related macular degeneration occurs when light sensitive cells in the macula slowly break down. This cell breakdown will cause central vision to diminish. This type of age related macular degeneration usually occurs in one eye. Over time, the other age may be affected with dry age related macular degeneration. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing if both eyes will be affected and the cause of dry age related macular degeneration is not known. </p>
<p>The most common form of age related macular degeneration is the dry form of degeneration. Over 85% of the people with age related macular degeneration have the dry form of macular degeneration. </p>
<p>There is no guaranteed cure for wet or dry age related macular degeneration. If you have wet macular degeneration, laser treatments and injections can slow down the vision loss, but it does not mean that the vision loss will not come back. </p>
<p>If you have the advanced form of dry age related macular degeneration, there is no treatment. If you are not in the advanced stage, your doctor may prescribe specific daily amounts of antioxidants. This formulation is not a cure for dry age related macular degeneration. This specific formulation of antioxidants will not restore your vision but it may slow down the progression of advanced dry age related macular degeneration. </p>
<p>If you notice any changes in your vision, you should see your eye care professional right away. The sooner you get a diagnosis the sooner you can start treatment.</p>
