Varicose veins are very unsightly and they can sometimes cause pain. They can be caused from being overweight or from hereditary factors. A big concern is when varicose veins are caused from circulatory problems. If you develop varicose veins, you may want to talk to your doctor concerning the cause of these large and gnarled veins.

Varicose veins can be prevented and even helped by maintaining a healthy weight. Exercises may also help to reduce the appearance of varicose veins. Exercise for varicose veins may be your best prevention and defense against these ugly and sometimes painful veins.

One type of exercise for varicose veins that anyone can do is walking. Try to walk at least thirty minutes a day. Walking will help to improve circulation in the lower body and keep the veins healthy.

Be sure to use a good supportive pair of shoes and begin a walking program slowly. Starting any exercise program quickly can cause injury, strained muscles and discouragement, which only leads to stopping the program. Even walking is an exercise program when the walking is continuous and designed to improve muscular ability and circulatory changes.

Swimming is an excellent exercise for varicose veins. Swimming laps on a regular basis will increase circulation throughout the whole body. Swimming strengthens the entire body and build muscles where needed. Water aerobics or even running in the pool with a vest will help to improve lower extremity circulation.

After exercises or at the end of the day there are other things that you can do to improve drainage from the veins. For instance you can lie flat on the floor and rest your legs on a chair seat or straight up against a wall for at least two minutes. This will elevate the legs higher than the heart and drain the blood from the swollen leg veins. If you find it hard to do this exercise, sit in a recliner and recline the feet up higher than the hips.

Another option is to lie flat on your back and place your arms at your sides or under your buttocks if you prefer. Raise your legs and start pedaling as if you were riding a bicycle. This is a great exercise for varicose veins to increase blood flow and decrease pressure on the veins.

An exercise you can do for varicose veins is to lie flat on your back, on the floor and bring your knee up to your chest. Hold your leg up with your hands by holding behind the knee. Move your foot up and down and rotate it at the ankle. Repeat with the other leg. This will help to improve the circulation in your legs and help prevent varicose veins.

Activities that can increase varicose veins are strenuous activities or standing in one place for long periods. Avoid strenuous exercises such as jogging, high impact aerobics or strenuous cycling. This type of exercise can actually increase the blood pressure in the legs and cause varicose veins to worsen by decreasing the amount of blood that is drained from the veins.

If you must stand for long periods of time, keep shifting your weight from one foot to the other. Bounce up and down on your toes several times an hour to aid in circulation. If possible, take a walk frequently. When you come home from a long day of standing, elevate your feet for at least an hour to help drain the blood from the veins in the legs.

Exercise for varicose veins can prevent these unsightly veins from getting worse. Exercise daily and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Aging can be a very expensive thing. You have to think about your health practically every day. You’ll notice that if you become careless, you’ll blow all your money on expensive medicines. The thing that makes it worse is the fact that you no longer earn the way you once did when you were still working. While you have pension coming in and are pretty much set for the rest of your life, you also need to think about the money that leaves your hands.

A great way to save money and take care of your health is to have your own herb garden. You can actually learn how to grow your own food and make it available for you anytime. Few tasks can be more rewarding and therapeutic than growing and preparing your own herbs. These are, after all, fascinating plants as each comes with its own traditions and folklore. More than that, it also comes with medicinal and culinary uses. Put them on a sunny windowsill so that they will survive. Make sure that they get at least five hours of sun each day. A window facing south or southeast would be the best choice. Position them away from drafts and use a soil-less potting mix to avoid diseases. Also make certain that the mix is light so that water drains out well.

A good herb to have is oregano. This is commonly used as a culinary herb, but there’s more to it than you think. It has also been used medicinally for decades. Tea from oregano can treat indigestion, bloating, urinary problems, and bronchial problems. It also relieves fever and diarrhea. If you’ve been a smoker all your life, you know that your lungs are now getting the care that they badly need.

Spinach is also something you can consider. It grows best with ample moisture and a fertile, well-drained soil. Grown for its edible leaves, this vitamin enriched plant is a great source of calcium, iron, and protein. Think about the good you can do to your bones when you have spinach in your diet. Osteoporosis is a big health issue among the older members of society. You can finally do your skeletal system a favor by giving it all the calcium it needs to stay strong.

Lastly, the mugwort. This has many uses and was traditionally utilized as a remedy for digestive disorders and a tonic for various ailments. It improves one’s digestion and increases appetite. Keep this around if you are extremely sensitive about the food you eat. If you need to gain weight because you are constantly getting sick, consider putting mugwort in your diet.

While you now have free time in your hands, you need to make sure you optimize this. Try to enjoy the taste of herbs. In fact, with the right combination, your food becomes tastier and eating becomes a more pleasant experience. Eliminate the excessive need for prescription drugs. When it comes to your health, natural is still the best choice. Get to know your herbs better and try to see which one helps you most.

Exercise and massage therapy helps individuals recuperating from significant injuries to reclaim their vigor and dexterity. Nonetheless, even in the case of lower body injuries and excruciating foot issues; physical therapy can supply significant relief. When elevating the feet and using special shoe inserts aren’t relieving the pain as they should, it’s likely that a more serious injury is occurring inside the foot. It is suggested to talk to your foot specialist to have X-Rays taken and to have a consultation. Nonetheless, once that’s done, some very helpful physical therapy moves can give relief to ease the pain. Here are three effective alternatives that can help.

Treatment For Plantar Fasciitis Can Be as Simple as Exercising

Plantar fasciitis is a very common and unpleasant type of foot ailment. This disorder, if not treated properly, may lead to the formation of added bone outcroppings that can stab nerves, muscles, and tendons, causing severe pain. Though athletes and dancers frequently have to deal with an injury like this, most anyone can have plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis treatment may include a surgical procedure to extract the bony spur that has grown in the bottom of the foot. Though a surgical procedure sometimes cannot be avoided due to the severity of the condition, physical therapy can be recommended to alleviate the pain and hopefully encourage healing of the foot. According to sports therapists, exercises to stretch your feet can help”provide significant relief. This involves standing up and flexing the front of the foot upwards, such as on a wedge or ramp. Then, with straightened legs, lean the body forward slightly to allow for a complete stretch.

Sharp Pains in the Feet May Mean that Treatment for Flat Feet is Necessary

Therapy for low arches is crucial when an individual has extremely low arches and does not use proper arch support in their footwear. Adequate support can be provided to the foot by wearing orthotic insoles. For treating fallen arches, the feet should be evaluated by a specialist promptly if sharp aching of the foot arches or heel pain are felt. After the exam has been done, ultrasound therapy has been shown to be helpful in resolving this painful condition. Since the problem with low arches is an overstretched arch that stretches down and touches the ground, the therapeutic solution can include massage, which can assist in relieving the pain. Orthotic insoles worn in the shoes is the most helpful way of treating this arch deficiency.

Painful Foot Conditions Can Be Caused by Overpronation

Pronation is a is part of the normal movement of the foot during physical activity.Nonetheless, when the foot rotates towards the outside (under-pronation) or instead rotates inside (over-pronation), painful conditions can result. In the latter, the arch takes on the full force of the body’s load and can flatten over time as well as lead to plantar fasciitis. Using orthotics is the best treatment for atypical foot pronation, and can aid the foot heal if the problem was not treated for a long time. About physical therapy, strengthening moves for the arches such as standing on your toes and flexing the foot while in a sitting position can help. See your doctor if pain persists.
Our feet are a part of every activity we engage in. Caring for your feet is one of the smartest things you can do for your overall well-being.

When it comes to caring for your heart, many have misconceptions. These mistaken beliefs often lead to poor health, especially when you grow older. That is why it is better to think about your lifestyle early.

If you suffer from excess weight, dropping just three to five kilos (six to twelve pounds) can improve your heart health. When you lose weight across the waist, the body’s ability to handle cholesterol and blood sugar improves significantly. You don’t need to achieve the perfect body, but it is better that you slim down gradually with exercise and a balanced diet.

If you’re worried about cholesterol, some people believe that you should always stay away from eggs. Although a yolk has about 200 milligrams of it, healthy people can still eat eggs in moderation without seeing numbers soar. There are two factors that determine the body’s cholesterol: the synthesis, which is genetically determined, and dietary saturated fat and trans-fatty acid intake, which promotes the absorption of dietary cholesterol. Consuming an egg a day doesn’t increase your likelihood to suffer from heart disease or stroke. However, if you already have problems, limit your egg yolk intake to no more than two a week. You must consider baked goods as well.

As for your exercise, daily walking is enough to help your heart. You need only do light to moderate exercise for twenty minutes a day. You don’t need to jog, brisk walking has been shown to be just as effective. Benefits may be due in part to the blood pressure lowering effects of exercise. Other metabolic factors may also be activated with a regular workout; one of these is an increase in the levels of good cholesterol.

You also need to think about freeing your life from different forms of vices. Other than quitting smoking, nothing can compensate for the damage done by it. Research reveals that about two or three years after you quit smoking, your risk of having a heart attack drops to that of someone who has never smoked. How’s this possible? It’s because when you smoke, the ingredients found in cigarettes take an immediate effect on your body. Your heart doesn’t pump as well and can’t relax, your blood vessels tighten, and blood clotting increases. When you quit puffing, you stop these dysfunctions. With drinking moderate amounts of wine and other alcoholic beverages, you can actually help your heart. The impact lasts long even when the alcohol leaves your system. Limit your drinks to three to nine per week, and try to take only red wine. When you overdo it, on the other hand, causes cardiac arrest.

Although debate continues as to exactly how stress contributes to heart disease, studies have shown that people constantly under anxiety have unhealthier hearts. Emotional stress and catastrophic life events are known to induce heart failure. Stress, nonetheless, is still difficult to quantify. But it still should be avoided when possible. How you manage situations makes all the difference. Try learning a few relaxation techniques because they have been shown to reduce blood pressure.

When it comes to your health, you need to think of long term. After all, your body needs more care when you age.

Someone with anaphylaxis reaction is having a serious allergic reaction to a food item or substance. Anaphylaxis is not just serious it can be life-threatening as well. The anaphylaxis reaction can include skin swelling, hives, lowered blood pressure, fainting and also dilated blood vessels. Shock results when someone is having a severe anaphylaxis reaction. If the shock is not treated immediately the person can die. The body is reacting to something the person has eaten or been exposed to in the environment by sending signals to the body that the particular item is harmful to the body and the body must react by producing disease-fighting antibodies called immunoglobulin E or IgE. This is a substance that is usually harmless, such as a food item, but the body is having an unusual reaction to the item. The first exposure to the item has the body not reacting to it, but producing the antibodies in response and then when you are exposed to the same substance a second time, the antibodies that were produced the first time will release a large amount of a protein called, “histamine”. This histamine will cause the symptoms associated with the allergic reaction such as the hives, breathing difficulties, drop in blood pressure swelling of throat or lips etc.

Usually the first symptoms of anaphylaxis reaction are severe itching of the eyes or skin of the face and then followed within minutes of the more serious symptoms such as swallowing difficulties and breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, abdominal cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, skin hives or angioedema (which is swelling like hives but under the skin). Individuals experiencing these symptoms or if you notice someone else having these symptoms help should be summoned immediately such as calling 911.

Those individuals who have experienced anaphylactic reaction before can be prepared for any future attacks by carrying medication on their person (purse or briefcase, pocket). A common mediation is epinephrine which is an injectable dose prescribed by a doctor. A common auto-injector, is called, the EpiPen. Those who have had a severe allergic reaction in the past should also carry antihistamine pills, such as diphenhydramine (Benedryl), as the effects of ephinephrine are temporary, emergency medical attention should be sought immediately after taking these prescriptions.

If you notice someone experiencing anaphylactic reaction, call 911 first and then look for special mediation pouch. Follow instructions and administer the medication by pressing the auto-injector against the person’s thigh and holding it in place for several seconds. Afterwards, massage the injection site for about 10 seconds so that the skin can absorb the mediation. If the person can do so without choking have them take an antihistamine pill. If the person is wearing a medical ID bracelet or necklace read the inscription carefully.

Have the individual lie down with feet raised higher than the level of his/her head.

Make sure any clothing that is tight is loosened such as a tie. If possible cover the individual with a blanket or coat. Never give a person in shock a drink.

If the person is vomiting or bleeding from the mouth, turn the individual on the side to prevent possible chocking.

If the person has ceased breathing or there are no signs of a pulse, start CPR and continue CPR until medical personnel arrive on the scene.

Today, we take medications to ease pain, to reduce fever, to take away stomachaches, to lower our blood pressure, to reduce inflammations and to fight infections. Diseases such as hypertension and heart disease among others have an assortment of medications that are prescribed by medical doctors to treat the symptoms of these diseases. Individuals are inundated with reasons to take medications. Many of these medications can cause adverse (unpleasant or undesirable) side effects. Other medications can trigger allergic reactions in the individual taking the medication. There is a difference between having an adverse side effect to a certain drug and experiencing an allergic reaction to a medication. Adverse side effects and allergic drug reactions can occur from medications that have been prescribed or from those drugs that we purchase Over-the-counter.

A medication that has caused an allergic reaction has initiated an allergic reaction from the immune system of the individual. The immune system is recognizing that the drug is a foreign substance and is producing chemicals, such as histamines in large quantities in an effort to get rid of the “foreign body”, the drug.

Individuals experiencing an allergic reaction to a certain medication can have symptoms that range from mild to severe ones that can be life threatening.

How do you know if what you are experiencing is a drug allergy or a drug side effect?

The simplest answer to this question is that a drug allergic reaction is one in which your immune system is causing the reaction and when the reaction is caused by a medication’s therapeutic action than that is called, experiencing a drug side effect.

Drug Allergic reactions:

The symptoms that one may experience while having an allergic reaction to a certain drug is that they may have skin hives, a skin rash, itchy skin, itchy eyes, congestion of the nasal passages, or a swelling in the mouth or throat tissues. If they are experiencing a severe allergic reaction to a drug, they may be experiencing difficulty breathing, their skin may turn a bluish color, they may feel dizzy, faint, feel anxious, be confused, have a rapid pulse, be nauseous, experience diarrhea or other abdominal problems.

When a person is not allergic to a drug, that drug may still irritate them when they take it.

Drug Side Effect reactions:

Side effects to drugs are undesirable effects that occur in addition to the desired or therapeutic effect that the drug is supposed to have. Side effects from the same drug can differ from one individual to another and can also depend on the person’s age, weight, gender, ethnicity and also the individual’s state of disease. Side effects can happen when the drug is first started, or when dosages or decreasing or increasing or at the end of the medication regimen. Side effects are important because they can cause the individual to stop taking the medication or to miss doses or change the dosage in an attempt to avoid the side effect. Common side effects to drugs are stomach upsets, dry mouth, can happen with the gastrointestinal system, the skin, the blood, brain or bone. Mental side effects that certain medications can have on individuals include: agitation, anxiety, aggression, depression, hallucinations, hyperactivity, irritability, restlessness, and sleeplessness, weakness even suicide.

Muscular side effects seen in some drugs are leg cramps, muscle pain, muscle tremors, muscle spasms, and muscle tiredness, swelling of the feet or legs, and unexplained muscle weakness.

Other side effects that individuals have experienced after taking medications have been a sore throat, flu-like symptoms, cough, jaundice, liver or kidney failure, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, stomach bleeding, vomiting, seizures, bone pain or bone loss, anemia, palpitations, low blood cell counts, high blood pressure, tachycardia (fast heartbeat, facial flushing, and thrombosis (blood clot).

It seems the topic of allergies sneaks into most any topic now a day. Everyone seems to have them or a family member suffering from allergies. What exactly are allergies and how do you know if you have them? When someone has allergies, they have an abnormal reaction within their immune system to one or more substances that are normally considered to be harmless substances. Someone who is not allergic to that particular substance would show no reaction at all to it. The person who is allergic to a particular substance will show an allergic reaction by the body releasing chemicals in response to the substance that will cause the allergic symptoms. When determining if a person is allergic to something one has to be careful that the reaction that is happening is not just a side effect to a medication that is causing the reaction.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

Young children allergic to food (food allergies) will develop atopic dermatitis (eczema). These children can then be at an increased risk for allergic rhinitis (runny nose) and asthma. School aged kids are more likely to develop allergic rhinitis and asthma than younger kids. Usually atopic dermatitis fades by the time the child is an adult, as well as the food allergies.

Typically the onset of allergic rhinitis and asthma starts sometime during school age, teen years or as a young adult. Both allergic rhinitis and asthma usually lasts throughout the rest of the person’s lifetime. During the lifetime though the symptoms can fade and even disappear, only to reappear again.

Food Allergies:

Usually with food allergies there is a skin reaction to the substance that was ingested. Skin reactions can be hives, swelling, itching or redness of the skin. These skin reactions usually occur within minutes of eating the food (they can however be delayed for up to several hours). Other symptoms besides skin reactions are: breathing difficulties, diarrhea, nausea, stomachaches, vomiting, runny nose, sneezing, and also lightheadedness.

Nasal Allergies:

Sneezing, itchy nose, itchy eyes, runny nose, post-nasal drip, dark circles under the eyes, and also nasal congestion are all symptoms of nasal allergies. Some individuals when they rub the palm of their hand on the nose cause a line to appear across the nasal bridge of the nose, called the “allergic salute”.

Summary:

Allergies are important to diagnose because not treating the symptoms can lead to being susceptible to viruses, sinus infections, ear infections and worsening of asthma if the person also has asthma.

Kids and adults of all ages can develop allergies to food, or environmental elements including fragrances and clothing materials.

Allergic reactions are not the same as intolerances to things such as milk intolerance. Side effects to certain medications are not allergies.

Kids can have food allergies and have them fade or disappear over time but allergic rhinitis and other allergic reactions once developed will last a lifetime but can fade and then reappear over time.

Allergic symptoms can be treated to bring some relief to the person suffering from allergies.

An allergy occurs when the body overreacts to the things which don’t typically cause problems for most people. These things are called allergens and the body overreacts to the allergens which causes the symptoms of allergies. The most common allergens include pollen from trees, grass, and weeds. Most allergies occur in the spring, typically late April and May, and are often due to tree pollen. Allergies that occur in the fall, late August to the first hard frost, are often due to ragweed. Mold is a common cause of allergies and is common where water tends to collect, such as shower curtains, damp basements, and window moldings. It may also be found in rotting logs, hay, mulches, compost piles, and leaf piles. This allergy is typically worse during humid or rainy weather.

The best way to keep allergy symptoms in control is to minimize the contact with the things which trigger them. Typical allergy triggers include pollen from grass, trees, and weeds, animal dander, dust mites, and mold spores, both indoor and outdoor varieties. To avoid pollen, allergy sufferers should stay indoors during hot, dry, and windy days in the spring, summer, and fall. It is also best to stay indoors in the early morning when the pollen counts tend to be the highest. When an allergy to an animal is the case, is best to not touch the fur or feathers of the animal. Pet allergens may also be found in the saliva of the pet, especially in cats. The easiest way to avoid triggering pet allergies is to avoid animals altogether.

Dust mites are tiny microorganisms that live in dust. Dust mites eat the dead skin flakes and live in bedding, furniture, and carpets. Getting rid of carpets and taking extreme care to vacuum and dust is the best way to limit the number of dust mites in the home environment. Encasing pillows and mattresses in allergen proof covers may also help. Using a dehumidifier helps in some cases as dust mites prefer humid environments. Mold produces spores which are airborne and may trigger allergies. There are both outdoor varieties of mold that thrive within soil and dead leaves, plus is accumulates in dark, moist areas such as under bathroom or kitchen sinks and in damp basements. If mold is a trigger, it is vital to avoid working with garden soil or raking fall leaves.

There are a few additional ways to lower the exposure to pollen. Pollen clings to clothing, skin, and hair. By taking a bath or shower and changing clothes after being outside the chances are greatly reduced of having an allergic reaction. Taking herbs such as Echinacea and dandelion has been suggested to help allergy symptoms. Keeping windows closed during the day will also help lessen pollen within the home. By implementing just a few of these suggestions, allergy symptoms should lessen greatly. There should also be a reduction in the amount of allergy medicine required, but any medication changes should be discussed with the primary physician first.

An allergy is sensitivity to a certain substance which is typically tolerated by non-allergic people. The allergen is the specific protein substance that a person is allergic to. The presence on an allergen in the body causes a series of chemical reactions in the immune system which results in individual signs and symptoms of allergies. While the tendency to be allergic is inherited, the actual allergy is not inherited. Allergies are a disorder of the immune system and often occur to environmental substances known as allergens. Allergies typically cause eyes to itch, the nose to run, and can even cause hives to appear all over the body. Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people.

Alternative allergy treatments are nontraditional allergy therapies. Alternative medicine practices are used instead of standard medical treatments. Alternative medicine is distinct from complementary medicine which is meant to accompany but not replace standard medical practices. Alternative medical practices are generally not recognized by the medical community as standard or conventional medical approaches. Alternative medicine includes dietary supplements, herbal preparations, special teas, massage therapy, and spiritual healing. Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice. These systems have evolved apart from the conventional medical approach used in the United States.

Many people turn to alternative treatments to get away from expensive prescription medications or to treat symptoms that have proved to be resistant to established medical treatments. Most medical experts tend to be skeptical of the claims made by proponents of alternative allergy treatments. Before any treatment or procedure is accepted as scientifically valid, it must undergo testing, clinical trials, and peer review. Alternative treatments generally have not met these standards and many rely on claims of success on the part of physicians and patients.

Most medical experts urge patients to avoid alternative therapies in the absence of scientific proof confirming the effectiveness and safety of these treatments. If a physician recommends an alternative treatment, the patient should get a second opinion from a board certified allergist or immunologist. Alternative allergy treatments include therapies that fall outside the boundaries of traditional allergy medicine. These treatments include homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs and dietary supplements, and hypnosis.

There are also more obscure treatments of alternative medicine available. Practitioners of alternative allergy treatments use these therapies to treat allergic rhinitis, food allergies, asthma, and other immune system disorders. Despite such skepticism, millions of people who suffer with allergies turn to alternative allergy treatments each year, sometimes on the recommendation of a physician. If a physician recommends an alternative treatment, the patient should seek a second opinion from an allergist. Alternative allergy treatments include hypnosis, acupuncture and acupressure, herbs and dietary supplements, and elimination diets. Most of the healthcare community urges patients to stay away from herbs and supplements and instead stay with proven prescription medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cannot guarantee the claims made by a manufacturer who may say that a product actually contains the active compound needed to treat a condition.

A sugar addiction can be seriously debilitating and we need to seek focus on holistic nutrition before we develop numerous and significant health problems. All of us are well aware that we should be eating a balanced diet, but primarily due to widespread marketing campaigns funded by the American Heart Association and other organizations, a great deal of emphasis has been directed toward low-fat foods and the removal of cholesterol from our diets, while there might be several other, just as dangerous, ongoing threats.

We know that heart disease can be the number one killer in our society, but we are not generally as aware that sugar can be very bad for us as well. Sugar is evident as a preservative, as a flavor enhancer in a very wide range of products, especially in processed foods. The truth is that we could lead a life without any additional or “added” sources of sugar, as there’s plenty to be found, naturally occurring within a wholesome diet.

Almost all of us have an addiction to sugar to one degree or another. In some of us, the craving for sugar might not be as apparent, but it is nevertheless there, mostly because our modern diet is filled with such a variety of processed foods, which are made up of sugar in the form of simple carbohydrates. The Western diet is largely responsible for the levels of obesity that we see in major countries such as the United States and as food is seen as a chore that gets in the way of our rather hectic lives, we tend to load our diets with foods that are far from balanced and are far from holistic health solutions.

If you notice that you have difficulty stopping off at the local store or gas station without walking out with something sweet – a drink or snack, then you’ve definitely got “the craving.” Drinking alcohol on a regular basis can also hide a sugar addiction. If you ever remember saying that the “foods that taste really nice are always bad for you,” then you’re indirectly admitting to having a sugar addiction.

Before you can kick your sugar habit, you have to take stock of your situation. Do you find that you are overweight, have little energy, become unfocused rather easily and wonder why you get those crazy mood swings? The likelihood is that your sugar intake is way too high. Less than 5 teaspoons or less then 20 g is the recommended daily intake for sugars. This refers to added sugars, rather than naturally occurring. Read those labels!

Once you have decided that you are suffering from sugar addiction symptoms and that your sugar intake is way too high, you have made the first big step to kicking your habits. You may find it rather difficult to start off with, but if you value holistic nutrition as much as you should, then you can develop a whole new approach to diet, exercise and look forward to living a much more productive life without a sugar addiction to slow you down.
