Lack of Sleep Related to Weight Gain?

March 31st, 2008 by Editor

Hmmmm. I have not been getting enough sleep for the last few months and have indeed been putting on a few pounds but I did not think the two were related. After reading about this study, I’m changing my routine!

I know that there are many not-so-good effects to not getting enough sleep or a good quality sleep. A study from the Sleep Disorders Center in Norfolk, Virginia found that people who sleep less tend to weigh more. Now, you could argue that if you weigh more you may not get a good night sleep due to heartburn or snoring problems associated with increased weight, especially around the neck.

So, another recent study looked at the effects of lack of sleep on healthy individuals. They found that the levels of hormone that tells the brain to stop eating is decreased by 18 percent, while the hormone that turns on hunger is increased by 24 percent. Sleep deprivation can affect the appetite and the types of food eaten. Talk about a double whammy!

Come to think of it, I have been eating like a little piggy every now and then in the last few months. This is really quite unusual for me and explains the weight gain. Now, is it the lack of sleep that is stimulating my appetite??

Well, I think I will find out and plan to get my eight hours (that has always been the best for me) every night.

Good night.
