For the last year or so I suffered (I don’t think that is too strong a word) with acid reflux. I’ve written a post earlier this year about this topic and I wanted to update you on my progress.
In April of this year I came across a program that claimed to be able to relieve all kinds of stomach problems in as little as one day. I read the sales page and found that I was familiar with the concept of food combining. I had read about it over 20 years ago but had not bothered with it as I was not having any difficulties at the time.
The site offers a 4 day free plan and, being of Scots descent (I like the free part) and being familiar with the ideas behind it, I decided that there was nothing to lose but the pain.
I followed the plan and had much relief after the 4 days. I immeditately ordered the full product and have followed the ideas faithfully (amost) for the last 2 months.
I have not bought any antacids or any prescriptions for acid reflux nor have I used any products I already had during this time (with one exception when I fell back into my old ways and boy did I pay for it!) The money I have saved in the two months has made up for the cost of the books not to mention the fact that I have no symptoms. This was not the case before despite the use of ‘drugs’. This was well worth the investment.
So, what was I eating that could cause so much pain?
Well, I was eating fresh fruit and nuts in the morning. Sounds OK doesn’t it and I thought “There can’t be anything in that causing the pain.”
WRONG! Eating fresh fruit with or immediately after anything else is asking for trouble as it is digested very quickly on its own but if you eat nuts (or grains or eggs or …) and then fruit, they are digested differently and the fruit just sits there fermenting, causing gas and acid reflux. So, now I eat the fruit by itself and the nuts about an hour later after the fruit has been digested and I have no problems.
If you have acid reflux you may have been told to avoid acid foods. Well, what you really need to avoid is eating too many ‘acid producing’ foods. These are NOT the same thing. For example, fresh oranges and tomatoes are often named as ‘acid foods’ and while they are acidic in nature, your body actually produces an alkaline solution to digest these.
NOTE: fresh oranges or juice and packaged orange juice are NOT the same. I can drink fresh orange juice with no problems but if I drink processed orange juice, it causes me pain. Processed juice is ‘acid forming’ as the processing has denatured the acids in the juice. FRESH FOOD IS BETTER.
You need to learn to balance the acid and alkaline forming foods in your meals for optimum digestion and maximum health. Although it someimes not easy to maintain when eating out and I tend to forget at other times, I can honestly say that my stomach has been in much better health in the last two months and that, execpt for that one day when I ate a poorly combined meal, I have had no acid reflux since I started this way of eating.
If you are having any digestive problems, you really have nothing to lose by giving Great Taste No Pain a try. They even give you recipes and a four day plan to follow so you don’t have to worry about what you can eat.
